Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes, at least 50m as this is normally how close to shore we will be. Everyone will be required to wear a lifejacket for safety precautions even if you can swim.

Will it hurt?

Your muscles will get sore while training and after. You're teaching them to use themselves in different ways and building muscles always hurts a little but it will be rewarding.

It's raining! Will we still train?

Yes - it's a water sport - you're going to get wet anyway.
Lion Dragon Boat Club has the most qualified safety resources in the Auckland Dragon Boat Association. We have the most sweeps and coaches than any other team. It's rare we cancel. We will modify training to suit the conditions so be prepared to train.
What do I wear?

You can't wear long, loose pants or anything that will get heavy when wet like heavy cotton t-shirts.
In summer singlet, shorts and jandals are just fine.
In spring/autumn add thermals, dri-gear or a quick-dry t-shirt and boat shoes. If you are particularly sensitive to the cold wear a beanie - you'll get hot once we have you paddling.

Bring a change of clothes, bottled water and towel for after training.

Do I need my own paddle?

No. You can buy one at any point if you wish to have your own but you don't need it. Lion Dragon Boat Club have their own set of wooden and carbon fibre paddlers that they lend out to paddlers who don't have their own.
